Literacy and gender equality in education are two of the most effective tools for addressing poverty, improving health and increasing civic engagement in underserved communities. The barriers that prevent children in these communities from staying in school and thriving are numerous. Under-trained teachers, lack of academic resources, social and economic pressures to earn money or start a family — all pose major challenges. Our programs are designed to ensure students have the guidance and resources they need, in the right sequence and at the right time, to support them through two critical periods in their education. These periods are early grade primary school, when children build a foundation in literacy, and the secondary school years, when girls are at greatest risk for dropping out.
