News Copy with Callout Pivot Activities Indicator Report

The COVID-19 pandemic swept across the world in early 2020, impacting all 16 countries where Room to Read operates. According to UNESCO data, school closures left an estimated 1.5 billion children out of school.

Although our usual Literacy and Girls’ Education Programs were paused, the Room to Read team quickly and effectively pivoted programmatic activities to include distance learning opportunities for students, such as TV and radio programs, direct messaging and remote mentoring. To complement these activities, our global research, monitoring and evaluation team developed an additional set of indicators to track and measure each activity.

We are proud to share our initial results in a new report. Highlights include:

  • Nearly 130 million households broadcasted to via TV and radio literacy programming
  • More than 1.6 million direct messages sent to teachers, students and their families via SMS, phone and social media to promote and facilitate learning
  • 34,241 mentoring sessions delivered remotely to 23,759 Girls’ Education Program participants
  • 523 children’s book titles in 12 languages uploaded to our Literacy Cloud digital library
