For Room to Read’s global community, April 26 was a day devoted to celebrating gender equality and the changemakers who are paving the way to brighter futures for us all. The day started with Room to Read’s CEO Dr. Geetha Murali ringing the Opening Bell at the New York Stock Exchange in honor of gender equality along with board members from around the world, Room to Read Author Advocates and supporters. In Geetha’s words, “Our presence here is symbolic of an equal and inclusive future for women and girls in board rooms, in business, and in all walks of society. It was the perfect way to warm up for the evening’s festivities.”
The gala brought together top names from the business, entertainment and media industries to celebrate our inspirational community of changemakers —the educators, mentors, partners and students who are creating a world free of illiteracy and gender inequality. Together we raised funds to benefit 48,000 children around the world with access to quality education.
Freida Pinto, actress, producer, activist and executive producer of She Creates Change and Peter T. Grauer, Bloomberg chairman, Room to Read emeritus and global board member, were honored with Room to Read’s Changemaker Award for their ongoing support of education equality. The evening culminated with performances by artist and activist DJ Switch Ghana alongside The Richie Cannata Band featuring Bernie Williams.
