BBC Radio: Dr. Geetha Murali on the COVID-19 Education Crisis

In the News

Listen to Room to Read CEO Dr. Geetha Murali on BBC’s World Service’s Newshour discuss the actions Room to Read is taking to prevent temporary school closures from becoming permanent barriers to girls achieving their hopes and dreams.

In times of crisis, the already intense pressure on girls to drop out escalates, as families look to daughters as caregivers, and encourage them to drop out and marry early for financial reasons. To keep girls in school, Room to Read has already started offering distance mentoring and support via telephone and online tools, and more distance learning initiatives are in the works.

Although many things have changed in the last few weeks, our commitment to education has not. We are moving faster than ever to keep children learning during this tumultuous time.

If you can, please make an emergency donation now or start your own fundraiser to ensure that this crisis doesn’t result in a generation of children who lack basic reading skills, or a generation of girls who drop out of school with no hope.
