This five-year initiative complements government efforts to improve reading skills for children from the pre-primary level to Grade 2 in Laos. With a special focus on children who do not speak Lao and children with disabilities, the project helps to improve the quality of basic education in the country.

Tatcha

To date, the partnership has funded over 8 million days of school for girls in Africa and Southeast Asia, and provided over 288,000 books to children living in book deserts within the U.S. Tatcha’s support has enabled us to provide in-school and after school-programs, family and community support, and access to diverse children’s storybooks for children living in communities experiencing deep educational and economic inequities. Among the various collections funded by Tatcha we have created STEAM books and titles focused on Peace and Equality with plans to create more diverse books for Black, Latinx, and Native and white American communities where high levels of poverty and rural environments create extreme barriers to learning.

McGovern Foundation is committed to providing resources at critical points along the education and tech workforce learning journey, while supporting historically resilient communities in forging a better future through the pandemic and beyond. They have generously partnered with Room to Read since 2021 to support literacy and gender equality in education for children in low-income communities, and to help students overcome learning challenges through digital tools and human connectivity.

United States Agency for International Development (USAID)

Room to Read partners with USAID directly in India through a prime cooperative agreement, as well as with USAID consortiums as a subcontractor in Bangladesh, Cambodia, India and Laos (with Winrock, RTI, CARE and Save the Children, respectively). Through these partnerships, we support strengthening education systems to provide access to quality early grade reading education at scale. Through technical and implementation assistance, we are able to benefit millions of children, teachers, education coaches, parents, government officials and communities with best practice training as well as teaching and learning materials in mother tongue languages.

World Food Programme

With support from the United States Department of Agriculture’s McGovern-Dole Food for Education and Child Nutrition Program, Room to Read has partnered with The World Food Programme to implement a six-year (2018-2023) literacy project in Cox’s Bazar. For the first two years of the initiative, Room to Read extended technical support to the implementing partners and implemented directly in two upazilas starting in the third year. The project's midline evaluation showed that, even after only one year of intervention, students' reading skills had improved, especially in letter sounding fluency and oral reading fluency.
